Psychodynamic therapy

Hurst Therapy Centre, Hurstpierpoint

My therapeutic approach is psychodynamic. Psychodynamic therapy is rooted in the understanding that our early experiences and unconscious processes influence present-day thoughts, feelings and behaviours. This doesn’t mean that we focus only on the past in the sessions, but to understand the present situation and what might need to change, it is helpful to understand the past.

In therapy, we work together, at your pace, to uncover recurring themes, relational dynamics and internal conflicts that may be contributing to distress or difficulty. This process can help you make sense of longstanding patterns, navigate complex emotions, and develop a more compassionate relationship with yourself.

The aim is to create room for insight, healing and change at a pace that feels safe and manageable. By engaging with the underlying emotional landscape, it’s possible to find greater clarity, resilience and freedom in how you live and relate.

Sessions are weekly and last 50 minutes.

I offer two ways of working:

  • Short-term work of 12 sessions where we agree a goal at the beginning and stay with that;

  • Open-ended, long-term work which allows for themes to emerge.

The root of the problem isn’t always known until we have worked together for a while so longer term work is usually preferred.

Both ways of working involve setting a regular time slot and meeting weekly for 50 minutes at the time agreed.

Free introductory call & initial consultation

I offer a free 15-minute introductory phone call or online.

We can talk about your therapy needs and then if you’re happy to proceed, we can arrange an initial consultation.

In the initial consultation, we can explore in more depth what brings you to therapy and what you hope to get out of it. I can also answer any questions you might have at this stage. We will also talk about confidentiality, means of communication, what you need to do if you want to cancel a session, fees, etc.
